Excerpt out of the Bible, Exodus 30:22-33
22 Then the Lord said to Moses, 23 Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels[a] of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels[b] of fragrant calamus, 24 500 shekels of cassiaall according to the sanctuary shekeland a hin[c] of olive oil. 25 Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil. 26 Then use it to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law, 27 the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, 28 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand. 29 You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy. 30 Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests. 31 Say to the Israelites, This is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come. 32 Do not pour it on anyone elses body and do not make any other oil using the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred. 33 Whoever makes perfume like it and puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from their people.
General info on our Exodus 30 Anointing Oil Blend
Modern day application of Exodus 30 anointing oil:
It is believed by many modern day Christian churches that every practising believer in Christ is a priest. This belief is based on the following excerpt from scripture (1 Peter 2:5-9):
"You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light"
The anointing oil we sell is based on this scripture and we believe it may be used by any devout Christian in any biblical ritual to consecrate surroundings and anoint believers.
We have made these blends commercially available to cut out the needless cost incurred by buying and blending various oils and to make the healing properties of essential oils more easily accessible.
Measurements in modern day units:
Certain research suggests that a Sanctuary Shekel (as mentioned in verse 23 of Exodus 30) was based on a different method of conversion, this being that 20 Gerah made up 1 sanctuary shekel.
Exodus 30: 23 500 shekels is probably about 5700 grams (12.566 lb)
Exodus 30: 23 250 shekels is probably about 2850 grams (6.283 lb)
Exodus 30: 23 24 500 shekels of cassia is probably about 279, 30 kgs (615, 75 lb)
Exodus 30: 23 A hin of olive oil is probably 3.667 litres of olive oil.
Formulation of our Exodus 30 Anointing blend
The carrier oil and essential oils in this blend have been carefully selected after due consideration was given to the biblical passage regarding its formulation and modern day knowledge of essential oils. It is a common mistake to assume that the amounts mentioned in Exodus 30 referred to the essential oil. This is incorrect, as the plant material and not the essential oil was probably used. Various parts of the plants mentioned were probably infused in olive oil and the anointing oil was a result of the infusion of the various materials after the olive oil had been strained off.
To use the same recipe today would be very expensive and we have adapted the recipe as closely as possible following international guidelines for the safe use of essential oils, which are highly concentrated hydrophobic liquids and would be considered harmful if used in the same quantities as mentioned in the bible.
